Why I Like Being the Average Height of a Man

I had a reader e-mail me a couple of months ago and she asked this:
How do you feel about being tall?

Well, I've been tall my whole life.
(Point of comparison: this best friend of mine is 4'11")

It's not easy being the average height of a man, but ya know...I deal with it.
Most times I don't really notice it, because well, a point of comparison isn't always available.
But when I DO notice it, it makes me feel a little self-conscious.
There are only so many boys in the world who are taller than 6 foot and let's be honest, the boys that are taller than 6 foot are sometimes really weird. Like "I hide in my man-cave and I can't talk to girl if it kills me" kind of weird.
However, through all the toil & strife of being tall, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

-I don't have to ever ask my husband to get that cup down from the top shelf. I can be independent!

-I don't have to worry about getting lost in a crowd. Just look for the tall girl with glasses!

-I have the option of being married to a basketball player who's like 7 foot. Because really, what 5 foot something girl wants to be 2 feet shorter than her husband? Kissing would be an adventure for them.

-When I wear high heels, I'm a boss.

-I have the designated job in my family to put the star on the top of the Christmas tree.

-I never have to worry about having my view blocked in a movie theatre.

-The little old ladies at the grocery store always ask me if I'll help them reach something. I get to do service!

-My legs are like a million feet long. And that's sexy!

-I get places a lot faster than most people because my stride is HUGE.

-I never have to worry about not reaching a bar to hold onto on the bus. Halleujah for that!

-People always assume I'm like 24, which is awesome because then people assume that I'm super mature. (Ha! I'll let them think what they what to...)

-I have better access to oxygen.

-I never get called shortie. Take that Justin Bieber.

-When someone asks "how's the weather up there?" I can really tell them.

Sometimes it's hard to be tall...like when every boy in your ward is shorter than you. That's always a riot.
However, I've learned a lot from it. I've learned to accept myself for who I am and I enjoy being tall!! It's truly part of the person I've become and it's a characteristic I would never trade for anything.
And that's why I like being the average height of a man.

Why do YOU like being you?

Old Men & How They Taught Me About Modesty

I must have some kind of aura around me that says:
"Please! Every weird person in the world, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE come talk to me!"
Because ya know what?
I talk to odd people on a daily basis.
It's taught me a lot about my social skills, let me tell ya.
I bring this up because of an experience I had today.
I work at an art museum and it usually closes at 5:00 p.m.
But today was an exception. There was a special presentation and I had to work later.
After we closed at 5:00, I went home to eat food then I had to be back up on campus at 7:00 to re-open the museum.
My manager told me to meet her at a specific building for the presentation and then we would walk back to the museum together.
Well, sometimes people make mistakes and my manager told me the wrong building, so I was walking all over campus trying to figure out where this presentation was being held.
As I walking, these two random old, balding men stopped me and asked if I knew where this presentation was being held.
I told them that I was looking for it myself.
We conversed a little more and then began the trek to the science building where we collaborated that, that would be the most sensible building to house this presentation.
As we began walking towards the science building, one of the old men said "Back in the 60's, I hated chemistry." He then points to the other old guy and says "Bob here is a chemistry whiz! I took the class with him so I would pass. Did you know that Bob is from Boston?"
Me: "Oh really? That's way cool! One of my friends is going to M.I.T."
Bob: "Wow. That's impressive."
Me: "Yeah, he's a very intelligent young man."
As this conversation took place a herd of girls in matching t-shirts and short shorts walked across the sidewalk and onto some grass. The other guy (not Bob) then exclaimed with ferocity:
"Gee! With the style now a days, I have to look up at the sky!"
Bob started laughing hysterically.
And so did I.
Because really, he's SOO right!
All these girls were basically wearing their underwear.
Long story short, I did find the building where the presentation was held, however, I was very impressed by these old men.
They had character and integrity.
I'm sure they weren't Mormon and they were---what seemed like--a hundred years older than me, but they taught me a powerful lesson.
Modesty really does make a difference.
People notice how you carry yourself and what kinds of messages you are sending by how you're dressed.
These guys might have been old and odd, but they taught me something.
And that's all that matters. Right?

I Have HUGE Feet!

It's the truth!
I have size 11 feet.
Pretty womanly, eh?
Whenever I go into Dillards, I always stop by the shoe department, pick out a shoe that I think is cute and ask if they have size 11.
Usually, this is the look of the salesperson:
It's the most hilarious thing EV. A.!
It's like people are afraid.
But whenever I get discouraged, I think of this quote by my grandma:
"It's okay to have big feet, you have to have a strong foundation!"
Yup, me and my man feet, just kicking butt and taking names.
